Couples Are Spending Too Much On Their Weddings, Here’s Why!
In this article, we dive into a few reasons why couples spend too much on their weddings. Read this before you start your wedding planning!
What are the main features you think of when it comes to wedding planning? The venue, the dress, and the flowers, right? Actually, there is a lot more to wedding planning than that. Not only do you need to plan for these major details, but there are also many smaller details that you’ll need to plan for.
For example, you’ll need to plan the stationery, catering, decorations, gifts and favours, and even the celebrant. In the case of a religious wedding, the celebrant comes with the venue, such as a priest in a church, the Imam for Islamic weddings, or even a rabbi for a Jewish wedding. If you’re celebrating on a beach or garden, you’ll need to pay for a celebrant’s services. In the end, you’ll find that you’ve spent much more than you initially planned. So, how does that happen? We’ll show you. Here are a few reasons why couples spend too much on their weddings.
Not Enough Research
If this is the first time you’re getting married, it’s easy to dive right into your wedding plans without proper research. Weddings don’t need to occur within a year after the engagement. Sometimes it can take as long as five years if you don’t have the resources or time to plan for it. Doing the research is important because there will be lots of tips and tricks you’ll find to help reduce costs. And if you don’t do the research, you won’t know what these tips and tricks are, and because of that, you’ll spend more than you initially planned.
So, do the research before you begin planning your wedding. It may mean you’ll get married two years after your engagement, but you’ll save on extra costs that you could use for other things. So, instead of spending that extra thousand on a photographer, you could use that money for things like buying a new house or saving up for future family expenses.

Rushed Planning
Sometimes, couples want to get married fast. They want to skip the headache of delayed planning because they want to be officially married to one another already. So, they rush the planning. They choose the first options they see and like, and they don’t care how much it costs. This kind of rushed planning can lead to overspending, and in some cases, they may be ripped off. Unfortunately, what they see is sometimes not what they get, and at the very end, it’ll show.
When you do start planning a wedding, don’t rush it. Take your time or get a wedding planner who can help you. These planners know what the latest trends are and how to make the best of what you already have. That way, you won’t be spending for a service that didn’t live up to your expectations.
Too Many Extra Details
If you’re consulting wedding magazines or Pinterest boards, or even DIY YouTube videos, you may find inspiration and ideas that add something extra to your wedding, so it’s uniquely yours. Sometimes, these extra touches can add up, and you’ll realise you spent much more time, effort, and money on something you could have done without. Want a photo booth, but the extra props cost extra? Make the props yourselves. Want themed decorations? Repurpose some of the items lying around your house and make them part of the decorations.
You don’t always need to buy those extra things. Sometimes, you can do it yourselves. Make that seating plan board with your own corkboard. Decorate the hall with the fake flowers you have in your home. Do your own hair and makeup instead of hiring a professional makeup artist. There are many things you can cut out of your wedding plans by doing them yourselves. We’ve already made a list of them in a previous post if you’d like to check that out!
You’re Not taking Advice
When it comes to wedding planning, couples won’t listen to advice from those who’ve been married before because they want to do everything themselves, or they already have a specific plan in mind. This means they’ll be paying much more for things that they could have bought in a sale or done on their own.
One of the major items that couples spend on is the dress or suit for the bride or groom, and most of the time, others will give plenty of advice on this element of the wedding. If this is the first time you’re getting married, chances are, you’ll be looking in those top fashion boutiques. You want that custom-made dress or suit, and you don’t want to skimp out on it. That’s great! But remember, many brides and grooms out there have done what you’re doing and sometimes even regret it. Sometimes, you’ll find that the dress you chose is on sale somewhere else, and instead of paying that $5000+ price tag, you could spend a few hundred dollars instead. So, listen to the advice that others give you. It’ll save you from spending so much on that one dress you’ll wear only once.
It’s A Once In A Lifetime Chance
The last thing you need to remember is that your wedding is a once in a lifetime event, or at least this one is. You may end up getting married again, but the bells and whistles of that wedding may not be as glamorous as this one. So, do what you can to make your wedding exactly what you want it to be, but bear in mind that it needs to reflect the cost. If you’re overspending on your wedding, and it isn’t exactly how you imagined it, it wouldn’t have been worth the money.
Be aware of the reviews of the services you’re paying for. Do the research and listen to advice from others. You’ll get more than your money’s worth if you do. So, be mindful of what it is you’re paying for, and if it is worth the money you’re paying for it, because once you’ve spent that money, and it doesn’t live up to your expectations, you’ll find that it wasn’t worth it at all, and you may not even get your money back.
